I am writing to you in the greatest concern for the life of Maria Kalesnikava, one of the most inspiring and courageous women of Belarus. She is a shining example of boldness and civil courage not only for the people of Belarus, but in Germany, Europe and the whole world. I therefore cannot and will not accept the fact that she has now been unjustly imprisoned for over 1,000 days under inhumane prison conditions.
I know that any contact between Maria and her family has been prevented since mid-February 2023. Lawyers are not allowed to see her either. We have learned from anonymous sources that Maria has still not recovered from the emergency surgery performed in November 2022 for a stomach perforation. Maria would have had to be monitored by doctors for several months and follow a special diet. Neither was done, or not to the full extent. As a result, Maria’s health continued to deteriorate. Despite her condition, Maria was repeatedly placed in solitary confinement and kept in complete isolation from the outside world.
These conditions of detention can lead to a relapse at any time with far worse consequences – in other words, Maria’s life is seriously threatened! The sole responsibility for Maria Kalesnikava’s life and health lies with the authorities and political decision-makers in Belarus, first and foremost with you!
In view of this, I urge you to:
- Provide Maria with appropriate medical treatment and grant access to doctors from Germany to examine Maria’s health condition;
- End Maria’s incommunicado detention and allow her to receive letters, phone calls and visits from relatives again;
- Allow parcels of supplementary food and medicine needed for her health;
- Allow visits by lawyers.
